Overheard #48

If you want to be crazy, you're in the right house!
Miss M, almost 7
(Yes, it's been a long, long while since I've posted.  This one was too good to not share.  And maybe - maybe - I can do better on posting....  It's been a busy month.  Or year.  Or some other long period of time....)

Overheard #47

Upon coming back from a lengthy visit to the mailbox, and responding to my inquiry about the length of time the trip had taken, Miss M responded:

It's freezing cold out there! I stopped for a moment to do some jumping jacks!

Presumably to warm herself, since it's a chilly 58 degrees outside.

We continue to exchange looks of surprise when M uses these phrases (for a moment, catch a glimpse, and more) in her everyday conversation. I'm more convinced than ever that moving her to a different school was absolutely the right decision. She is blossoming!

Overheard #46

Mr. J is watching a movie that he has seen many times. He has the words pretty much memorized. As he is saying one character's part, along with the movie, he follows it up with:

Jinx! He owes me a Coke!

Overheard #44 and #45

Miss M wanted to play the animal sounds game while we were in the car.  Here's a snippet of the conversation following the 5th or so animal sound.

Miss M: (makes hissing sound)
Mom: A snake.
Miss M: No. (repeats hissing sound more loudly)
Mom: Didn't you just make that sound and it was a snake?
Miss M: Yes, but this one's more hibernated.

And the answer? It was a King Cobra.

Again in the car, and this time we were listening to the radio.  "Holiday" by Madonna came on, and Mister J said, "That's from Kids Bop 5!"  Mister J informed him that it was actually a song from the 80s, and the Kids Bop version was a remake.

And from the back seat, Miss M chimes in with, "It's from Hades?!?"

Read into that what you will...

Overheard #42 and #43

My 8.5 year old son: "Mom, Michaelangelo is one of the Ninja Turtles' names!"

Me: "I know - the Ninja Turtles have been around since I was a kid!"

My dear, sweet, 8.5 year old son: "But in black and white, right?

Heh.  Maybe I am that old ;)

And other good one for you - it's one that he doesn't like for me to mention but that I find utterly adorable.

Last school year, Mister J's class had studied a bit of history that really stood out to him.  That day, he came home explaining that he had learned about some things that happened, "...way back in the Nineteens."  Big J and I now use this phrase when we talk about things that happened a while back - like graduating from high school, getting married, buying our first house.  We find it so sweet, and just a little funny - and it just gives us a happy feeling to remember our boy saying it.

So, even though I wonder some days if I am "old," I keep reminding myself of what I've always believed - age is a state of mind.  Apparently, I'm not alone.  Hop on over and read this great post by Tsh over at Simple Mom.  I, too, agree that the 30s are my favorite decade so far.  And I think the 40s are gonna totally rock!

Overheard #41

So exciting to be reviving this series - I always enjoy looking back at these posts!

This morning, what M said:
Mom, can I try some of that frosted twist cake?

What she meant: Cheese Danish

And then later to J, when he declined a taste:
You're missing out!

No question about what she meant!  And the ate the rest for dessert this evening - after a taco, cucumber slices, carrots, and a little Mexican hot chocolate.  Either art camp is keeping her so busy she needs more fuel, or she's growing (again)!

Overheard #40

It's a "snow day" here, and even though we've been hanging out inside today I made my kids go upstairs for rest time.  Miss M gets rest time every day at school, and she needs it.  Mister J needs it too, since we are supposed to be at a Christmas get-together tonight - weather and road conditions permitting.  Here's my most recent rest-related exchange with my mom-napper:

Mister J:  Mom, how much longer?
Me: Please go lay back down.  I'll come get you when rest time is over.

...time passes...

Mister J: Mom, when is rest time over?
Me: In a while. (This was about the 4th interruption by a child who was supposed to be resting...)
Mister J:  How long is a while?

Oh, dear.

Overheard #39

As Miss M was sitting down to write her Christmas List last evening:

"Mom, can you help me write my Christmas options?"

Love her!  It was a joy to help her spell out the things on her list, which were:
Box of Princess Dress Up - a box of dress-up clothes from Costco.  Unfortunately, I think they are sized too small for her.
Moving Chair with Flashing Lights - a massage chair, also at Costco.  This short description really doesn't do justice to the detail with which she originally described it, but we had to fit it all on one page!
Toy Story 3 - self-explanatory

Overheard #38

This morning, upon coming downstairs and finding the kids not only awake, but playing Wii....

Mommy: "How long have you two been up?"

Miss M: "About an inch and a half..."

A) It's Saturday and B) that was funny, so I just didn't fuss about the whole playing-wii-without-actual-permission thing.  They have been waiting  for the weekend this week (they usually don't ask "When's the next no-school day?"  It's been a long, busy week...), so I'll let them play just a bit longer.

Silly Boy! (also... Overheard #37)

Last Saturday, upon realizing that the knees of his blue jeans were green:

"Oh, man - grass grease!"

Jeopardy! (also, Overheard #36)

From my Facebook status last night:

My 6-and-3/4-year-old just answered a Jeopardy! question all by himself. Way to go, Mister J!

And after someone inquired as to the question:

Honestly, I didn't hear the whole question - but I heard him say "bamboo", then the contestant said "bamboo", and then Alex said "correct". And then we all celebrated with Mister J :)

Overheard #35, I think

Last night at bath time, Miss M was singing the "Days of the Year" song.  In case you haven't heard it before, it goes a little like this:

January, February, March, and April,
May, June, Ju-Y-M-C-A!

I'm sure her teacher, Ms. G, is very proud!

Overheard #32 and #33

After getting post-haircut Dum-Dum lollipops...
Miss M, holding up wrapper for Mister J to read:  "What flavor is this?
Mister J, paying more attention to the pictures than the words on the root beer wrapper: "Cracker Barrel"

As I was going through the McD's drive through for an iced coffee:
Miss M:  Can I get a box?
It took me a moment to figure out that she wanted a Happy Meal....

There were a few more good ones today, but my brain got full!

Overheard #31

Miss M has decided she only likes "fixed" tomatoes - she doesn't like her cherry tomatoes quartered, she likes them whole.
Also, while I was rearranging three of the upstairs rooms, the kids were playing pirates in the soon-to-be toy room - complete with their versions of British accents. Too funny!

My sweet daughter, after a sneeze that I did not acknowledge:

"Bless me..."

Oh, do I ever love that spunky, sassy, sweet, tomboy-girly-girl!

Overheard #29

On the way home from lunch after church yesterday.

Mister J (muffled): Mom, are there nuts in who-oppers?

Me:  What?

Mister J (louder, but still muffled):  Are there nuts in who-oppers?

Me:  What are who hoppers?

Mister J: This candy with the chocolate outside.

He had gotten a pack of candy from the "candy crane" and I didn't realize he was eating it as I drove home.  Then I had the a-ha moment....

Me:  Oh, you mean Whoppers?

Mister J:  No, it's who-oppers.  There's a 'who' on the label.

As if 'candy crane' wasn't funny enough!

Overheard #28

...at dinner tonight.

Mister J: "What's mayonnaise?"

Yes, that's right, our 6-year-old doesn't know what mayonnaise is. Big J was adding it to a sandwich at dinner this evening, and that's when the question came up. Since Miss M is allergic to eggs, we rarely use mayo - but do keep a small jar around for the adults to use on sandwiches and in the occasional pasta salad. Of course, we still don't use it often, and almost never finish the jar.

Big J and I had a moment of did he really just ask that? before we explained mayonnaise. What a weird thing to have to explain....

Overheard #26 and #27

In the last week, I've heard doozies from each of our kiddos. Hope you enjoy!

One night last week, as we were putting together the salads for dinner, I realized we were out of Italian dressing. It's Mister J's favorite salad dressing, so I hopped on the 'net to see if I could throw something together from the ingredients in my pantry. I found a recipe that I was willing to try - meaning I had the ingredients on hand and it was easily halved to make a 'test' portion.

He gave it a try, which I was proud of, but then told me that it was, "not quite right to the same Italian in the bottle." He was, for his age, quite gentle and tactful.

Miss M, on the other hand, was not so gentle - she was dripping with drama and poutiness when she told me, "This is not the best day ever!" On this particular afternoon she was tired and I'd had to 'be the Mom' and enforce a rule only moments before, so she was unhappy with me. Still, I had to stifle my giggle until she turned and walked away.

Taste Test ... or ... Overheard #25

Miss M and I were cooking dinner last night, and snacking while we waited for some water to boil. There was a bit of leftover guacamole in the fridge, so I pulled out a bag of chips. Immediately, Miss M asked for a chip, so I gave her one. Then I offered her one with some guacamole.

"What's that?" she asked.

"Guacamole."

"I don't want rock-e-a-mole on my chip."

"How about you try one with guacamole, and then I'll give you a plain one after that."

"OK." (tastes chip with guac)

"Do you like it?"

"Yes."

"Do you want another one?"

"Nope."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

She was so cute as she tried to say 'guacamole' - and as much as I'm tempted to try and hold on to those cute things she says, I do help her with the correct pronunciation. (The only thing that we don't work on is the way she says "Toy Story 2" - she says "Stoy Tory 2"! We've tried, and she's just not giving this up yet.) The funniest thing, though, is that we've had this same conversation - about a different food each time - for WEEKS now! Sometimes with foods that she's eaten before and truly enjoyed!

I'm linking this post to Ann Kroeker's Food on Fridays. Hop on over to read Ann's post, read others who have linked up, or to add one of your own!

Overheard #24

On this first official day of our Christmas Break... Overheard from the next room:

"Aww, now it's a BIGGER mess!" - Mister J, age 6

"I not the singin' girl, I the DANCIN' girl!" - Miss M, age 3 1/2

And in the same room, stifled laughter from Big J, who heard it all, too. Yep, it's just an ordinary day around here!
