I am not a fan of reality television. In the last year, I've become someone who really doesn't watch much television. When I do watch tv, it'll be the news, evening game shows that we can watch with the kids (WoF and J!), or something "nerdy" like a documentary.
However....
Sunday night after the Superbowl - which I hardly watched, even for the commercials - was over, I ignored the tv while The Voice came on. It didn't take long for me to be very interested.
You see, I've quit watching tv - especially reality shows - because they seem to be full of mean people, greedy people, or people that make very poor decisions. Sitcoms, evening dramas, even morning talk shows - I get so annoyed by all of the "drama" that fuels these shows. So I just quit watching them. (And maybe I traded them for facebook and twitter and blogs and pinterest - but even there I try to get away from the drama, taking bloggers off my reading list, unfollowing tweeps, hiding or unfriending folks on fb.)
But The Voice - so far - seems different. The artists/judges are encouraging. OK, so Christina was a little mean to that Maroon 5 guy - but to the artists that are auditioning, the judges are generous and caring. It is such a nice change to see 'good' on television!
Before Sunday night, I had no idea who Cee Lo was (is?). I still don't, really, but I know that he was in the Super Bowl halftime show with Madonna. And when I googled Blake Shelton, I found out that he and Miranda Lambert sang before the Super Bowl. I missed that part. And apparently, he's a country musician. I did know of Christina prior to seeing the show. In fact, she's the reason I thought I wouldn't like it. Let's just say that her style is different from mine. (Here I am blogging about a show that's "nice" and I feel mean for saying that.)
My husband found this last bit terribly funny. I am pretty out of touch (obviously) with current music unless it's contemporary Christian music. It's the only thing on the radio that's appropriate for our kids to listen to, so that's where my radio station is set. Don't get me wrong, I like a variety of music, but I usually listen to it when I'm driving. And a lot of that time, the kids are with me.
Even for the songs I like, it's rare that I know the title or artist. I guess I'm just not that into music. But I am into The Voice. At least for now!

Two great tips
First tip - from my FB status today:
"Reply" does not equal "Forward" - and mistaking one for the other often equals embarrassment.
Oh, yeah - it was a doozy. I'm not ready to talk about it.
Second tip:
If I'm doing a load of laundry at night, especially after the kids are in bed, I turn off the chimes on the washer and dryer and also close the door to the laundry room. So that I don't completely forget about the load that's in there, I leave the light on. When I come upstairs at night, I notice that the light in the laundry room is on, and that's a (quiet) reminder to me that there's laundry to be dryed/hung up/folded.
In other news - it's not 90 degrees here anymore! Yay! To celebrate, I laced up my sneakers and went for a run today after a most-of-the-summer hiatus. And then I ate Doritos for lunch. I'm not proud of that last bit.
So, what's happening in your world?

Remember that time...?
... that Mister J got treated for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever?
You know, because his symptoms were pretty much a perfect match for RMSF. And although it could be just your run-of-the-mill nasty virus, there's still that chance that it's RMSF. Which you should treat no later than the fifth day of symptoms. And since the second trip to the ped this week for the crazy fever, combined with nausea, chills, and some "who is that?!?" crankiness happened to be on the fourth day of the fever, the ped called in the prescription.
Better to err on the side of caution - but as a friend of mine put it, I just might win the 'strange illnesses my child has had' contest in the after-school pick-up line. This from the friend whose daughter has a fever so high that the thermometer simply said, "HIGH." (She's thankfully doing ok with some good meds for a big ol' ear infection.) And I'd likely have to compete with a school mom friend whose son's spider bite just might be MRSA instead. They each had a visit to the emergency room. We just rated a "can-you-be-here-in-45?" appointment with the pediatrician. This is a contest I'd be glad to lose.
(PS - With a dose of acetominophen, this afternoon's fever, headache, and crankiness subsided. However, the fever spikes at night, even with ibuprofen. Hoping we see and end to this very soon.)

My Week - and I'm still Thankful (also Thursday Thanks Tank #25)
It's been an interesting one, for sure, but I still have a lot for which to be thankful.
We had lunch at school with the kids on Monday. Our Valentine treat to them was bringing in Chick-Fil-A! With the "lunch in the classroom" arrangement of their school, we aren't sitting in front of the preschool or K1 classes with our 'special' lunch - we get them from their classrooms all sit together at a special table. We typically have some really fun family time when we do this, and Monday was no exception. Have I mentioned this is a great treat for Mommy, too? No lunches to pack! And with the "free milkshake when you buy two meals" special that was running that day, Daddy got his favorite cookies-n-cream shake for dessert! Thankful for a fun Valentine's Day (even though I forgot to get pictures)!
The interesting part of the week started when I picked the kids up from school that afternoon. Miss M, who'd been feeling great at lunch, had a sore throat and her voice was hoarse and squeaky-sounding just a few hours later. As a precaution, I took her to the pediatrician on Tuesday. Turned out just to be a virus (thankfully!), but since she had laryngitis she also needed vocal rest. Miss M on vocal rest? That's funny. So I kept her home on Wednesday as well - to be sure she didn't make things worse before her class field trip on Thursday.
Did I mention that I was scheduled to chaperone the field trip? And did I mention that around midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morning Miss M vomited? On the carpet? And that we are scheduled for company this weekend?
Both kids woke up due to the ... event. Which resulted in midnight bath time and early a.m. laundry. And also carpet cleaning - as well as I could, at least, for something that really needed professional attention.... Thankful that Mister J got back to sleep pretty quickly and that the guest room was easily made ready for Miss M to relocate for the night (that's not always a guarantee, especially when clothing exchange season is on the horizon!).
Big J saved the day by working from home since Miss M could not go to school and arranging for the carpet to be cleaned approximately 12 hours after the event. (Rock star, he is!) Miss M woke up on time, hungry, and wanting to limbo (I'm not joking). It wasn't a stomach bug, just a case of church supper not sitting well. Thankful on all of those counts, too!
I still chaperoned the trip, which was a good thing since two of Miss M's classmates got sick while we were there. Then I came home and cleared out Miss M's room and the landing at the top of the stairs so the carpet could be cleaned. I figure if it's getting cleaned, then we might as well have it cleaned to the corners! So thankful for a local company that can come out and clean carpets on the same day you call. They were already near our neighborhood. Also, the cost was less than we expected - the bonus for being a repeat customer (yes, there have been other carpet cat-tastrophes - not a typo).
With all of these surprises, I've managed to stay relatively calm - surprising even to me! How am I maintaining my sanity? Perhaps yesterday's walk with a friend was preventative medicine. I'm so thankful for that spur-of-the-moment opportunity! Now if I just had some spur-of-the-moment movers to help me get the upstairs back in order.... :)

School Night

Mister J is working on a project about Woodrow Wilson while Miss M alternately poses for the camera and does her own "homework."

ETA: Seriously? Another upside down photo? I think I've figured out the problem, but only just now.... Will fix this shortly...

Seriously?!?
What an evening! Mister J went to bed with chills, a fever, and tummy ache this evening. He also asked me to set up a monitor so I could hear him in case he had an 'emergency.' And he was worried about vomiting on his comforter, so I pulled it off of the bed and put a cotton throw blanket on him - and his trashcan beside his bed, just in case. When it was time to put Miss M to bed, she decided that she wanted "to watch football" - and hugged me to try to get her point across! Then, when she went to bed, five minutes later she got up because she couldn't see her fingers. For real. Then she had to potty. Then she needed her daddy. She finally stayed....
After being home from school for 4 snow days last week, Mister J will be home again tomorrow. We did manage to complete his "100th Day of School" project before the fever and tummy ache set in - I hope he feels better in time to go back to school for the celebration. I'll post about his project later this week - it's great!

Overheard #19
On the way to a home improvement store yesterday:
Mom to Mister J: Should we go to Lowe's or Home Depot?
Mister J: Home Depot.
Dad: Why did you pick Home Depot?
Mister J: Because I picked it.
Dad: But why did you pick it?
Mister J: Because....
Dad: But can you tell me why?
Mister J: Because. The end.
So, dear reader, do you think we (a) held it together like adults and explained to Mister J that his final answer was smart, and not in a good way? Or do you think we (b) laughed and laughed like it was just too funny, and then worked hard to pull ourselves together and not break into grins as we tried to explain to Mister that his final answer was smart, and not in a good way?

"Girl Milk"
We ate lunch a Chick-Fil-A last week with a few friends. In the middle of all the excitement (of eating out, at Chick-Fil-A, with friends - each of those exciting in its own right), Miss M refused to drink the bottle of milk that I gave her. Can you guess why?
This is the bottle of milk she ended up drinking....

She would not drink the first bottle of milk because it had a boy on the label. The second bottle, the one she wanted, had a girl on it - hence her request to drink the "girl milk."
Seriously, moms of daughters, is this typical?

Overheard #16
Mister J is learning about rhyming words at preschool. On the way home from our spontaneous evening, he piped up, "Grass... A$$... Do they rhyme?"
As soon as Big J and I stifled our laughs, I said to Mister J, "Yes, Sweetie, they rhyme," stifled another laugh, and continued, "Mister J, that word you said after 'grass' wasn't a nice word."
Mister J looked at me and, as if I couldn't remember the other word, said, "A$$."
"Yes, that word. It's not a nice word."
"I know."
Oh, my!
He still hasn't told us where he heard the word, even though we have told him that nobody will get in trouble. I can tell by the look on his face that he does know, he just doesn't want to tell me. That's a battle for another day. For now, I'm just hoping that he won't be telling Mrs. E, his preschool teacher, about the latest rhyming words he's discovered.

Too Much of a Good Thing
It's true what they say about too much of a good thing. It can be bad for you. Just ask Miss M.
Two things that you can have too much of:
Actually, if you truly have a question, skip Miss M and come straight to me. I am the one that had to deal with the bad thing that came afterwards....

... as Mister J was enjoying the tricycle at Grandma and Grandpa R's house....
Big J (as Mister J was coasting/speeding/flying down the driveway with his feet off the pedals): "Don't run into your sister!"
Mister J (as he leaned into the u-turn at the bottom of the driveway): "I won't! She gets out of the way!"

Overheard ... #6
... while on the phone with Big J:
(You need a little backstory on this one - today is Mister J's birthday. You'll see more about that soon enough!)
Me: Oh, by the way, E called and I gave him your cell number. Did he reach you?
Big J: Just got off the phone. He invited me to [exciting sporting event in nearby metropolis] this evening.
Me: Oh, bummer that it's tonight and you can't go!
Big J: What do you mean?
Me: (As blood pressure rises and face reddens, but with voice as calm as possible...) It's your son's birthday
Big J: Ok.... And?
Me: (Blood pressure higher, face redder, voice slightly less calm...) And. It's. Your. Son's. Birthday.
Big J: (Laughter. Lots of it. I'm surprised he didn't fall off of his chair. And then, amid continuing laughter....) Sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face for that one! How's your blood pressure?
He knows me too well! With blood pressure slowly settling back down to normal, I laughed along with him as we finished up our conversation. Admittedly, he had me going there for a moment, but I have to confess that I'm thankful for a lighthearted moment like this in the midst of such a busy week!
