Sweet Spontaneity

It was Family Night at Chick-Fil-A tonight - and the theme was princess night! It was also Free Cone Day at our local Ben and Jerry's Scoop Shop, which opened last week. We decided to treat the kids to a surprise dinner out followed by ice cream. The weather was perfect, and we had a great time. Here are just a few snapshots of our fun, spontaneous evening.

Miss M is making a Princess wand, Mister J is making a pirate necklace. On the way to our next stop, the kids were in the back trying to use the wand to turn the mommy-van into a 'log with wheels' (since a log without wheels wouldn't roll and we'd miss out on the ice cream!).

A perfect evening - a magic princess wand in one hand and a free scoop of vanilla in the other!

I couldn't decide between these two of Mister J as he enjoyed his scoop of strawberry!

What a sweet, special, spontaneous evening!

Hi there!

I noticed your comment on Jane Anne's blog about your child having an egg and peanut allergy... my little boy does too. Our kids look to be about the same age too... I have a 5 year old boy and 2 1/2 year old boy girl twins.

Anyway, I was wondering about Chickfila. Is it ok to eat there with an egg and peanut allergy? We have avoided going there because I thought they used egg in the batter to make their chicken.

What a glorious day it would be if we could eat there again! Ha!

Hi Trisha -

Thanks for stopping by! Yes, our kids are about the same ages. My son is 5 1/2, my daughter will be 3 in a month. You have probably been living with these allergies longer than us, but I'm certainly happy to share my perspective. I'm always glad when we can learn from each other!

Thanks for posting your question - I actually get asked about Chick-Fil-A a good bit. As far as the egg allergy and eating at Chick-Fil-A, it may depend more on your allergist's recommendation than anything. Miss M can eat egg that has been cooked into something else - think of things like cakes, cookies, etc. We avoid scrambled/fried.boiled eggs, sauces/dressings made with eggs. Most literature will tell you to avoid eggs in breading and/or pastas, which M has eaten without any problems.

With Chick-Fil-A, we were more concerned about the peanut oil. They use refined peanut oil, so the offending protein has been removed. I know of folks who avoid Chick-Fil-A because of the use of peanut oil, even though it is refined. We continue to eat there because we were doing it well before Miss M's allergies were diagnosed. The only thing we have ever had trouble with there are the dipping sauces (some of which contain egg ingredients). Of course, we have always avoided the brownies! We currently avoid ALL nuts (on the advice of Miss M's allergist) and have not introduced fish or shellfish yet - but may start that process following her next appointment.

All of that being said (wow - what a long comment!!!), it really is a personal decision. (But I sure hope you can go back! Do you think he'd eat the grilled chicken sandwich?)
